LIGHT MASS^ by Yael Mer & Shay Alkalay for Raw-Edges Design Studio

The LightMass^ sculptural lighting collection features single-material structures designed to enrich interiors with a delicate, feather-like presence while minimizing environmental impact. Inspired by the looping framework of Victorian greenhouses, each piece is large in volume yet light in weight.  With modern LED technology removing the need for traditional shades, LightMass^ redefines the light shade—interacting with beams rather than diffusing them. When off, they appear as floating line drawings; when illuminated, they glow with soft translucency. Designed and made in Hackney, London, the collection uses a durable, 100% renewable PLA-biopolymer. The open mesh design and FDM process eliminate waste and reduce material use.

Established in 2007 by Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay, the London-based studio is renowned for its inventive approach to design, working on products, limited-editions, and space-installations. Raw-Edges has won awards, including A&W 2020 Designers of the Year, Design Miami/Basel Designers of the Future, Dezeen Award, Wallpaper* Design Award, and Elle-Decor EDIDA Award. Their designs are found in permanent collections of leading international museums such as MoMA in New York, the Vitra Design Museum, and The Art Institute of Chicago.
