A look back at Surface Design Show

Design Guild Mark - February 28, 2019 - 0 comments

Who attended this year’s Surface Design Show (5-7 February)? We spent a couple of days meandering the aisles absorbing the creativity on display and taking care to spot potential 2D holders.

The exhibition marks just over a year since we launched the 2D category and visited in search of some potential applicants.

And what a year it has been as well! It seems like only yesterday that we were calling in the inaugural entries.

Three excellent designs were awarded a 2D Design Guild Mark in 2018.

• The Alchemy Collection by Rachel Evison for Bute Fabrics.
• Jitterbug from the Shoreditch Range by Gary Bridge for Axminster Carpets.
• Silicastone by Alasdair Bremner & David Binns for Panaz.

It therefore seemed fitting that we should return to the exhibition.

This year we brought one of our expert judges in toe, renowned interior designer Daniel Hopwood.

Daniel spoke on ‘Interior design trends and their relevance to the surface industry’ on 7 February.

He delighted the packed out talks area, projecting his enthusiasm on to the crowd with insight into his latest projects.

The talk wouldn’t have been complete without Daniel also mentioning the inaugural winners of the Design Guild Mark’s 2D category.

He said: “It has been a great privilege to be involved in the Design Guild Mark as a judge on the new 2D category. The Design Guild Mark is an award that is highly regarded in the industry and quite rightly as the judging committee is quite exacting.

“It has been a super opportunity to witness some new sustainable products that I, as an interior designer, am beginning to use.”

Head over to the journal section of Daniel’s website and read his entry following last year’s judging day.

With the 2019 judging days now weeks away, we’re super excited to see which pieces will be awarded in 2019. Stay tuned…
